STA CONVENTION 2017

Registration is open for all sites and strands.

District wide Professional Development, Friday May 5th, 2017

Convention 2017 is planned by your colleagues!
We are 11 teachers - your colleagues - who are working to pull together another great convention for our wonderful STA convention day. Feel free to contact any one of us (via school email) to discuss workshop ideas and recommendations. Members of the committee are: Anne McNamee, Julia MacRae, Carolyn Sousa, Kevin Amboe, Karen Moon, Jacquie King, June James, Carol Sirianni, Brian Arkell, Yvette Dabbs, and Jatinder Bir.

Looking forward to wonderful Keynotes, workshops, and excursions.

Candy Palmater - Mi'Kmaq radio personality, lawyer, comic, lesbian, writer and creator of her own show on APTN, host of Q and the Candy show on CBC. We are really looking forward to hearing from her!

Andrew Miki of Starling Minds, (https://www.starlingminds.com/) speaking about teacher mental health and wellness.

There are many sessions offered this year on the topic area of mental health, wellness, anxiety issues, mindfulness, meditation, self regulation etc. Teachers could easily choose to make this area of study a whole day experience for themselves.

We have new excursions and some popular ones from recent years. In some cases the excursions are planned so you could attend the keynotes and then go on a fascinating excursion in the afternoon. Others are whole day experiences.

 Sites and logistics:
The main sites this year will be the same as last year, except switched and plus one! Kwantlen Park Secondary is the site of the Secondary workshops, and Johnston Heights (with Mountainview Montessori and WF Davidson beside it for extra space) will host Elementary and Fine Arts specialty workshops. We will also have an Aboriginal Site at Earl Marriott, where French Immersion will also be offered. We are so fortunate in Surrey to have so much to offer and so many opportunities to engage with fascinating PD.

Volunteers, please! If you would like to help us on Convention day, even if it is only for an hour in the morning when we can really use the help (i.e. help directing people to parking, help at reception desk, help with classroom logistics, assisting presenters with sign in, help directing people to their workshops etc...) please email Julia MacRae (macrae_j (at) surrey schools.ca) and let us know. We ALL make wonderful Pro D happen!

Registration Tips:
If you want to attend a workshop at one of the sites, and also an excursion you will have to register twice. It is up to you to avoid time conflicts! Do not overbook yourself, please, just register for one workshop/ excursion/ keynote at the same time, as there is a lot of demand, and everyone needs a chance at workshops. Enjoy Convention this year!
