Self-Care for Teachers through Art Therapy

This workshop will provide participants with access to a variety of art material and equipment. Prior art experience is not required and those who are new to art are encouraged to participate! Some background information about Art Therapy will be given through a short lecture and hand-outs. Participants will have time to attempt art activities, discuss, and debrief. The main outcome for this workshop is to provide an opportunity for teachers to experience self-care through art and to explore their inner creativity for healing and rejuvenation.

Target Audience

All grades

What to bring

Please wear comfortable clothing that you would not mind getting paint on - or bring an apron/smock. There will be a limited number of aprons and smocks on site. If you have your own journal or sketchbook, you are welcome to bring it into the workshop to use in your work and/or for self-reflection.

Swetha Ranasuriya

I am a secondary school art teacher (10 years) currently training to become a professional art therapist at Vancouver Art Therapy Institute. As an art teacher I found myself guiding students through personal adversity through their art. Sometimes they were using their art to build resiliency, or as a way of decompressing tough situations. I wanted to be able to guide them through these situations with adequate background knowledge, which led me to pursue training in Art Therapy. What I found was not only a way to guide students, but also a way to care for myself and my social-emotional well-being. I would like to share my findings and experiences in Art Therapy and help other teachers to build their own self-care routine!
