Djembe Drumming for Fun, Community-Building & Wellness

This literally "hands-on" workshop will introduce participants to the African djembe hand drum and how it can be used with students to promote Social/Emotional health and well-being.  The Drumbeat therapy program, which originated in Australia and is now part of their curriculum, will be explained.  Briefly, Drumbeat uses activities to show analogies between drumming and life to help students with communication, relationships and self-confidence.  It is particularly successful with "at risk" students as it gives an alternate voice to those who may find it difficult to express themselves verbally.  Participants will engage in activities from the Drumbeat program as well as learning some traditional African rhythms and how to use them with students.  No experience necessary and fun guaranteed.
