The WorDshop: self-expression and effective communication

This workshop tackles the question: how can we reduce the fear of public speaking (and even make it fun)?

The workshop is divided into two parts: performing/speaking and writing. The first half will include live performances from the workshop facilitator and practical skills to improve public speaking. The second half will focus on the how to make poetry and creative writing relevant to students, and how to encourage them to share their work. The attendees will need to bring their own paper and pens but the rest of the material will be provided.

This interactive workshop is based on and designed according to the new B.C. curriculum’s core competencies: communicating, thinking, and personal/social competency. With an emphasis on connecting and engaging with others, these workshops help participants develop creative thinking skills as well as cultivate self and social awareness through writing and presenting poetry, speeches, and stories.

Target Audience

Lindi Nolte

Lindi Nolte is a spoken word performer, a public speaker, and a certified B.C. teacher. Lindi has performed on stages across B.C., competed in the Canadian Festival of Spoken word poetry, featured at the Vancouver Poetry Slam, and facilitated workshops in high schools in the Surrey School District as well as UBC. She is currently a TTOC in the Surrey District.

Lindi was born and raised in South Africa. As a second language learner, Lindi was confronted with the dire task of learning English at the age of 11 when she immigrated to Canada from South Africa with her family.  When she graduated from high school in White Rock, B.C, she decided to return to her motherland to study English and Psychology at the University of Pretoria. She returned to Canada after successfully completing her Bachelor of Arts and recently graduated from UBC as a certified high school English teacher.

Lindi’s spoken word/public speaking workshops are engaging, emotional, authentic, and empowering. The workshops are intended to introduce this exciting art form through live performance, and inspire participants to write and share their stories, poems and voices.
