Audain Art Museum, Whistler, BC

The day will involve multiple activities including an introduction to the Museum as a whole and a review of the current school programs on offer and a guided tour of their special exhibition space, which at that time will be Matisse and Fred Herzog. After a break for lunch, participants will complete the Copper, Cedar and Wool: Explore Art from Northwest Coastal First Nations school program which is situated within their permanent collection. In this program students explore how historic and contemporary BC Coastal First Nations artists have used their knowledge and respect of natural materials to create timeless works of art. Through direct comparison and observation, we will discover the elements, materials and stories found within these artworks and how they have transformed over time, while also having the opportunity to creatively express our own identity in the art-making Studio. The art project will be an identity blanket.  This program not only explores historic and contemporary first nations art and history, but also ventures into the art of identity. (5 hour workshop)
Available to any Surrey teacher.
