Using Children's Literature to Support LGBT Students in Primary Grades

This workshop is designed to help teachers become more comfortable with teaching LGBT content in the primary grades, specifically through children’s literature. I will show examples of what I have done with my grade 1-3 students and provide a scope and sequence of how to get started in teaching this material and where you can go from there. The workshop will be a mixture of lecture and discussion, where I will try my best to answer questions you may have about teaching with these books. You will leave with lesson plans and discussion guides for using specific LGBT books that are likely in your school library already or are readily available. You will also receive a book list to engage with particular topics like gender inclusion and different kinds of families.
