Legal Issues for School Counsellors

This workshop will cover legal issues and concerns for school counselors such as child protection and reporting, confidentiality, consent to counseling, liability, boundaries and what to do when you receive a subpoena for documents or to testify. Current legislation and case law will be discussed. The workshop will be interactive and there will be an opportunity to ask general questions.

This session is open to school counselors only.

Robyn Trask

Robyn Trask is Legal Counsel with the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) and represents the BCTF in labour arbitrations and at all levels of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada.  Prior to joining the BCTF, Robyn worked with a Toronto litigation firm and completed her articles with the Canadian Auto Workers’ Union.  She has also spent time working with legal organisations in Sierra Leone and Ethiopia.  Robyn is President of the board of West Coast Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund (West Coast LEAF), and is the Secretary-Treasurer for the Canadian Bar Association National Labour and Employment Law Section.
