Women at Work: at Home and in the Neighbourhood: Stories of historic Strathcona.

Strathcona - Chinatown is Vancouver's oldest neighbourhood, yet the vital work its ethnically diverse women did to support themselves and their families is almost unknown today. This workshop will focus on the stories of 10 worksites and the women who occupied them from 1917 through the late 1950s. Participants will meet, among others: the Chinese teahouse workers of Pender Street; the First Nations' families at Canfisco, Vancouver's first Black teacher, the amazing Barbara Howard; the women who ran "Vie's Chicken and Steaks' which was the town's best and most famous chicken joint; the iconic Harlem Nocturne Trio, 'Choo Choo' Williams, Eleanor Collins and Thelma Gibson; and the tenacious Margaret Gee who was Canada's first Chinese woman lawyer. This talk aims to promote discussion and to pique curiosity while helping to sketch in a vibrant and important piece in the puzzle of early settler Vancouver.
