Write Now!  (Secondary)

Full-Day workshop:  9:00 am to 3:00 pm

Location:  White Rock Elementary

1273 Fir Street, White Rock.

Workshop Description

Come spend Convention with three working writers: Danika Dinsmore (fiction),  and JJ Lee (nonfiction) and Heidi Greco.

The day will feature three concurrent sessions in which teachers will write alongside Grade 10 - 12 high school students.  Students will provide an authentic audience and immediate feedback as to what types of writing they want as part of the proposed new ELA Creative Writing courses.

Each workshop will contain ten teachers and ten students, and over the course of the day everyone will have a chance to work in each of the three genres.

The day will wrap up with a sharing of the writing produced during the day and a draw for signed copies of the authors’ books.

 Author Bios

JJ Lee is the author of The Measure of a Man: The Story of a Father, a Son, and a Suit, which was short-listed for the 2011 Governor-General’s Literary Award for Non-fiction. Lee is also a fashion columnist and art critic for various media outlets in Vancouver, including CBC Radio, the Vancouver Sun and the Georgia Straight, as well as a producer for CBC Radio.

Danika Dinsmore is an award-winning writer, spoken-word artist, and educator who currently works and plays in speculative fiction with an emphasis on juvenile and young adult literature.  Released in the Faerie Tales from the White Forest middle grade fantasy series are Brigitta of the White Forest, The Ruins of Noe, Ondelle of Grioth, and the prequel Narine of Noe.  She also writes short stories that blur the lines between speculative and literary fiction.

Heidi Greco is a longtime resident of the Peninsula, having lived in South Surrey and White Rock just about forever. She’s a forager at heart, whether for berries or mushrooms or words. Her poetry, fiction, essays and reviews have been published in books, magazines, newspapers and online. A new collection of poetry, Flightpaths: The Lost Journals of Amelia Earhart will be published by Caitlin Press later this spring. She keeps a sporadic blog at outonthebiglimb.blogspot.ca
