The “Math Yes We Can” Program

SUCCESSFUL STRATEGIES FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING MATHEMATICS
by
Rahael Koshy Jalan

The “Math Yes We Can” Program
The goal is to provide a comprehensive program in mathematics fundamentals, an
essential building block for success in Science, Technology, Engineering, and other areas
of learning which require a solid foundation in Mathematics.
The program utilizes a series of workbooks entitled “The Language of
Mathematics” authored by Rahael Jalan, to enable students to learn the basic
concepts that form the foundations of Mathematics.
The teachers and tutors involved with delivering the “Math Yes We Can”
curriculum participate in a teacher training program that is designed to
familiarize them with the workbooks, and refresh the skills needed to effectively
engage students in learning the core concepts of mathematics.
“The Language of Mathematics” workbooks have been designed and field tested by
Dr. Rahael Jalan, with the objective of increasing the graduation rates of Aboriginal
children from high school with a solid foundation in mathematics. The program’s
innovative approach to teaching and learning Mathematics enables students to bridge the
gaps in their math knowledge, and successfully complete grade 12 math at a level
required for professional programs that require competency in Mathematics.
In addition to providing a teaching template for topics that are at the core of mathematics,
classroom engagement is facilitated by broadening the scope of the discussion to include:
1. The relevance of Mathematics in our lifelong personal decision making.
2. The ways that culture influences how we use mathematics in our daily lives.
3. Systemic barriers and classroom issues to learning Mathematics.
4. How to improve relevance of mathematics for Aboriginal students.
The program is custom designed to address the following:
For Teachers
(a) how to use the curriculum and methodology in a classroom,
(b) professional training & teacher development.
(c) teaching students how to attain competency in mathematics.
For students
(a) how to attain competency in mathematics.
