The Expansion of Poetry within Our Current Media Ecology

The Expansion of Poetry within Our Current Media Ecology

Capacious in its scope, poetry can be combined with music, video, and crafts. In this 90 minute workshop, Spenst will show how one can combine various arts with poems in order to encourage thinking, writing and creative expression. Some of the material presented will include poems about music - including "Busking" by Kevin Young - and poems inspired by contemporary music - included "mixed tape" by Katherena Vermette. We'll also learn a little from some music video theorists and look at how the poetry of lyrics are developed into a larger work of art (yes, music videos!) Plus: video-poems and where to find them and what to do once you have them! We'll conclude by unplugging from technology to learn a couple of origami folds and analyzing poems that use origami as a metaphor - including Don Domanski's "The God of Folding."

There will be handouts and a shared google folder for you to access some of the materials. Please bring a pen and/or laptop as there will be some writing prompts.
