In an age of phone cameras and photo quantity over quality, an examination of Photography itself can be used to flip the script. Historical photographic practices will be examined for how they can slow us down from quick, thoughtless documentation to intentional, considered observation. “Photo challenges” are opportunities for mindful presence. The work of creating impactful and meaningful photos often begins well before picking up the camera. Explore ways to develop the skills of observation and awareness using the camera and photograph as the creative prompt.

Alexis Marie Chute is an award-winning artist, photographer, filmmaker, gallery curator, and bestselling author. Her books include The 8th Island Trilogy (Above the Star, Below the Moon, Inside the Sun), memoir Expecting Sunshine: A Journey of Grief, Healing and Pregnancy After Loss, Prairie Spirits, and The Eternal Summer of Alberta's Herbarium. Her award-winning documentary film based on her memoir has screened globally. Alexis is an outside-the-box innovator, passionate storyteller, cultural connector, and engaging, international public speaker. She has her Bachelor of Fine Art in Art and Design from the University of Alberta and her Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Lesley University, Cambridge, MA. Her artwork is represented by the Art Gallery of Alberta. She is the curator for Wild Skies Art Gallery and the Multicultural Heritage Centre Public Art Gallery.
