REAL Science Standards Based Assessment

Are you feeling like you're "emerging" or "developing" with your proficiency in standards based assessment? If any of the words in the previous sentence describes your teaching journey - or, perhaps, some words scare or confuse you instead - then this workshop is for you! In REAL Science SBA, we'll spend a brief amount of time reviewing what standards based assessment means for our practice. After - and more importantly - we'll spend a majority of time answering the questions and diving into practical strategies that will help you get started implementing SBA with your science classes on Monday morning. We'll also spend time analyzing and discussing resources that teachers have developed for SBA while finding ways to apply the same SBA themes to your own assignments. Feel free to bring your assignments and tests to our session for discussion and feedback too.

I am currently the science department head at Burnaby South Secondary, but I’ve been teaching for roughly 17 years. I’ve been fortunate enough to present my work at the NSTA (National Science Teachers Association) Engage 2020 conference, the Middle Years Primary Intermediate Teachers Association (myPITA) conference, Tapestry Conference, the BC Science Teachers Association Catalyst Conference, and conferences held on district Pro-D days for the Sooke, Kamloops Thompson, and Burnaby School Districts. Some of my work can be found on my blog (www.realsciencechallenge.com) where I post useful science teaching resources and strategies for anyone to download. I also publish weekly on my YouTube channel, where I share what I’m working on in my classroom with regards to science learning, teaching and assessment.
